Americans love their dogs and there's no dog a pet owner loves more than their own. But when it comes to breeds, Americans have their favorites and for the 27th straight year, the Labrador retriever is the most popular dog breed in the country.

The American Kennel Club announced the most popular dog breeds of 2017 on Wednesday and while the Labrador retriever is steadfast in its popularity, the beagle was knocked out of the top five category for the first time since 1998. The French bulldog jumped two spots to No. 4 and was responsible for dethroning the beagle, according to the AKC.

In Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., the most popular dog breed for 2017 was also the Labrador retriever.
